If no-one is there to hear a sound, is there still a sound?

I’ve decided to do something a little different today – a debate that isn’t Doctor Who related (though the new series starts today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). And here it is:

“If a tree falls over in a forest, and no-one is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?”

This is one of those statements that is meant to clear your mind, and I must say it does work. But what is your opinion on this?

I think that it still does make a sound. I mean, there will still be vibrations in the air waves, won’t there? It’s just no-one’s ear drum vibrates, and gets a message sent to their brain (if you don’t really know how exactly we hear things, see this Wikipedia article).

But it really depends on what you classify “sound” as. Is sound only when someone hears something? Is it just air particle vibrations when no-one does hear it?

What are your thoughts on this kind of mind-bending subject? Do you have any other questions like this that you’d to share? Tell me in the comments below. Have a great day, and enjoy Doctor Who if you watch it. :-)

Gallifrey - my dogs name (it really is)

In case you haven’t yet noticed, I like sharing music. A lot. In previous posts you will have found This is Gallifrey: Our Childhood, out home, I Am The Doctor, Westminster Bridge and more. Most, if not all of them, have been Doctor Who music. Well, today you’re in for a treat. The music isn’t Doctor Who. It wasn’t composed by Murray Gold. And it’s good. You can watch it below:

What do you think? Like it, or hate it? Why?

Westminster Bridge

I’m in a bit of a musical mood today, so how about some music? It was a hard choice, choosing one piece of music to put on this blog. Very hard. But I’ve decided. :-)

What exactly is your favourite piece of music? Not one that you would have to listen to forever, but one you really like.

It can be a strange thing, music. For instance, Brass music is just air going through metal to create a sound. With woodwind, the sound is the reed vibrating. Singing is a form of speaking. Strings are something scraping across some strings. And percussion is just the sound of something being hit. What exactly is music? It can be anything, really. Even the sound of someone typing with a keyboard could be classed as music (but I don’t think it’s likely the next number 1 hit will be the sound of someone typing :-D ). Humans can be really weird.

Anyway, the piece I chose as my favourite piece of music is below. Enjoy!

War of the Worlds

Have you ever seen War of the Worlds? No? Well, you should because it really is absolutely amazing. The music, the aliens, the acting… it all goes together to make a fantastic show that, well, isn’t at all cheap. :-) But it’s worth it.

It is based, I think, on a book written quite some time ago. It is about aliens coming over to Earth and helping themselves, with disastrous consequences for the human race and particularly the main character/narrator of the story. After many problems with the aliens and dazzling special effects, the humans manage to beat the evil Martians. Sounds normal, you think. Aliens come over looking scary then mere humans somehow defeat them and the aliens aren’t seen or heard of again. Not quite. Right at the very end of the story, the Martians return… but this time, there may not be a happy ending…

Overall, I do think it was amazing. Even though I was barely awake for part two. :-D If possible, see this show!

You can listen to one of the beautiful pieces of music, titled Forever Autumn, below. Lucky you! :-D

Any music act

Imagine you get a magic gold ticket that lets you travel through space and time to see any band, or music act, living or dead, together or broken up, live at a venue near you. Who would you pick? Why?

Queen! Not the Queen of England, or any other Queen in the history of the universe. Just the band Queen. Some of the band is still alive, but the original lead singer is dead.

Seeing Queen live would be great, but it would also be fantastic to see the following live near me:

  • The Beatles (not the insect)
  • The BBC National Orchestra of Wales (performing the Doctor Who music)

Now, what about the venue… Got it! My church would be the perfect venue!

What band would you see?

Queen

Queen, LIVE!

Heart of Courage

I have been looking for this tune for a very long time. It has been on many movie trailers recently, and I wouldn’t have been able to get a name for it without my Dad‘s iPhone. I have finally found it, and you can hear it below:

What do you think? By the way, there is a new ‘tagline’ for this blog (you can read it at the top right of the page). What do you think of that?

Have a great day! :-)

Something I’d never believed until I experienced it

Blame The Daily Post for all these hard topics that I can’t find anything to write about. They really challenge you! Anyway…

So, What’s something you never believed until you experienced it? Probably the magical power conductors have (at least where I live! :-) ) of finishing late. And starting late. Generally late all the time. :-D

What is something you believed in, until an experience changed your mind? Music that was terrible. That is wrong. Some music may be nicer than others, some sounds may be nicer than others, but no music is terrible. I think. Don’t ask me about the experience. :P

So, what are your beliefs, and what experience may have changed your mind? What is something you never believed in before, but something changed your mind?

A conductor :-)

What’s the biggest lesson you learned so far this year?

Hmm. I have, to be honest, learned a lot so far this year about many things. I’ve learned how to draw a straight line graph. I’ve learned some new notes on my Clarinet. But the biggest??

It could be some things I learned at the Moorside Church House Party 2011. We had an amazing guy for the sessions and I think everyone learned a lot.

It could be, as I mentioned earlier, things to do with my Clarinet. I have learned a lot with that. Recently, I learned how much I hate marching with the brass band I play with… oh, wait, that was for Remembrance Day in November 2010. Before 2011.

I think I am going to leave this question open, as I have learned so much. If you have an exact answer, write it in the comments. If you have more than one, feel free to share that as well.

Straight line graph

Oh, such fun...

On a slightly different topic (I mean by that very different), you can watch the two parts of the Doctor Who Comic Relief 2011 special. It’s short, but very good:

Have a great day!

Outcasts theme tunes

Below you can hear some amazing tunes from BBC One’s Outcasts. The show, unfortunately, got officially cancelled due to low viewings, though the music is still amazing. First is the opening them tune, then the ending theme tune:

Do you like the music?

If stranded on a desert island, what one music album would you bring?

Hmm. This is a hard one. Well, if I had to choose one music album to live with for the rest of my life, I would probably choose Doctor Who: Series 5 the soundtrack (see it on Amazon here). It has some amazing music on it, that I could listen to again and again.

The reason I like it so much is there is lots of variety. I and I like variety. Lots.

What would you choose? One album, for the rest of your life. What is it you like about it?

While you are deciding on your favourite album, do listen to one of the pieces of music that is included in the album I chose:
